A few years ago, Felipe Caicedo was an average Manchester City striker frozen out due to their multi-million pound signings but with a weight of expectation on his shoulders.
Today Caicedo is Levante’s most prolific scorer in the Spanish La Liga and is finally living up to his full potential.
He made his debut for his national side, Ecuador at the tender age of 16 and was widely regarded as one of their hottest prospects for the future.
Caicedo started his career with FC Basel of Switzerland where he attracted interest from all around Europe including Serie A outfit AC Milan.
Eventually the youngster chose Manchester City as his destination of choice and moved for a fee of £5.2 million.
Caicedo was described as “one of the great South American talents” and compared to such strikers as Adriano and Ronaldo.
The arrival of Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor at the north-west side made opportunities for Caicedo fairly rare, and he was loaned out to gain first-team experience.
First in line was Sporting CP who initially agreed to loan the youngster for one year. After seven appearances for the Portugese club, both parties believed that Caicedo wouldn’t find his form in Portugal and the deal was prematurely terminated in January 2010.
Malaga was his next location and he contributed four goals in eighteen appearances for the Spanish club. He scored a lovely effort against Racing Santander on his debut but couldn’t really find his feet and decided to terminate his loan spell.
On the final day of the transfer window in the summer, one hour before it closed, Caicedo agreed a deal to join Levante in Spain.
Since arriving at Levante, Caicedo has greatly aided his side fight a relegation battle and has racked up eleven goals in twenty appearances so far this year.
The Ecuador international is finally finding the form that he has so far lacked in his career and is really making an impression in Spain.
Levante have the option to buy the prolific striker for only £1 million at the end of this season, where many believe he is worth at least five times that.
He has been a shining beacon in a great season so far for Levante. He is widely considered the main reason why they sit 13th in La Liga at this moment.
Caicedo is built like a brick house, having a similar build to that of Didier Drogba. His weaknesses seem to be his selfish mentality. Many times this season he has attempted something something spectacular when a simple option was in sight.
Nevertheless, Felipe Caicedo is a player that we will be seeing more and more of in the coming years.
At the age of 22, Caicedo is one for the future and one that we can see in a multi-million pound deal in years to come.
