Tomorrow sees the penultimate round of games in this year’s South American Under 20 Championship with Uruguay and Brazil battling it out for the title.
Uruguay defeated Argentina 1-0 on Wednesday to keep themselves in top place with Brazil just a point behind them.
Uruguay’s shock win against the Argentinians came courtesy of a single goal from Matias Vecino.
The game turned out to be a classic derby match with high levels of passion masking a nervous two teams.
The Central Espanol midfielder, Matias Vecino, grabbed the goal after 64 minutes. The Argentina defence were torn apart by a luring through ball and Vecino had the composure to send the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Casemiro, who has become a rising star of the tournament, grabbed the only goal for Brazil in their 1-0 victory over Ecuador.
It was his eighth minute header that was good enough to secure the win.
Elsewhere in the group, Chile celebrated a 3-1 win over Under 20 World Cup hosts, Colombia.
Colombia took a shock early lead when Cristian Magana netted at the wrong end of the pitch.
Despite this, Chile fought back and at the end of the game it was a comfortable victory for Chile.
Goals from Felipe Gallegos, Ramses Bustos and Bryan Carasco ensured the win.
Uruguay’s collection of wins over the tournament have been less than convincing.
In the final group, three out their current four games have all been 1-0 wins with their other game ending in a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Brazil have scored 9 and conceded 3 in the final group stage so far.
It will be a very tight encounter. Although Brazil are stand-out favourites, Uruguay have managed to rack up a lot of points in this group and have even beat one of the favourites, Argentina.
Elsewhere on the final matchday, Ecuador play Chile and Colombia face Argentina.
