Gary Gardner’s hat-trick saw Aston Villa thrash their NextGen Series Group C rivals Ajax Amsterdam 3-0 last night.
Ajax have one final game left to play against Rosenborg for their chance to top the group, where currently Aston Villa stand proud.
Both sides have already qualified and are looking ahead to the quarter-final stage where a team from Group A awaits them.
Ajax started brightly and were unfortunate not to take the lead inside the opening twenty minutes.
However, Samir Carruthers chipped a lovely cross into the box following a surging right-hand side run and Gardner was there to head the ball into the net to give Villa a half-time lead.
Daniel Johnson could have made it two before the break but unfortunately he hooked his close-range effort straight over the bar.
Ajax keeper Mickey Van der Hart could do nothing about the second goal as skipper Gardner’s free-kick took a slight deflection on its way through.
An emphatic 3-0 victory was to be the end result as Gardner completed his hat-trick with a low shot into the corner of the net.
Aston Villa will face Barcelona, Marseille or Celtic in the next round dependant on tomorrow night’s results from that group.
In a post-match interview, Gardner insisted that Villa will go into the Quarter Finals feeling confident about their chances.
