Kenny Swain’s young England side suffered heartbreak in the semi-finals of the Montaigu Tournament as they crashed out on penalties against Russia.
The game finished 2-2 after 80 minutes with Russia grabbing a late equaliser and the match went straight to a penalty shoot-out.
England won the tournament last year and their bid to retain the title looked to be on track as they took the lead through Arsenal’s Jordan Brown.
Russia equalised only minutes after but England were awarded a penalty to give themselves the opportunity of gaining back the lead. Manchester City’s Kean Bryan converted from the spot to put the Young Lions ahead once again.
After 78 minutes Russia got their equaliser to send the tie to penalties as they scored from an indirect free-kick inside the English area.
Both sides scored their first three kicks in the shoot-out but it was Russia who took it on the fourth as they won the shoot-out 4-3.
England will play their final fixture of the tournament tomorrow as they face hosts France in the 3/4th play off.
