Holland kicked off their European Under 17 Championship campaign defending their title with a convincing 3-1 win over hosts Slovenia.
Oranje found themselves 3-0 ahead before Slovenia pulled back a consolation goal late on in the match.
Albert Stuivenberg, the Holland coach, played down his side’s chances of retaining the title but there was little to suggest they would do anything but in this game when Rai Vloet sent them ahead after thirteen minutes. Thom Haye’s cross met the boot of Vloet who only had to turn it in and rightly did so to give Holland the lead.
It got even better for Oranje after Joroen Lumu doubled their lead. He headed home Wouter Marinus’s cross to pile more misery on the host nation so early into the tournament.
Lumu turned provider to Nathan Ake who swiftly moved to apply the finish to Lumu’s delivery after 61 minutes and surely secure the win for Holland.
Luka Zahovic gave some hope for Slovenia when he scored a 74th minute effort but it wasn’t to be for the hosts who sit bottom of their group after the first round of games.
