Manchester United have signed Crewe Alexandra wonderkid, Nick Powell.
The 18-year-old attacker has moved to Old Trafford for £4million, but will see out the rest of the season at Gresty Road with Crewe still having their play-off final against Cheltenham to play.
Powell has scored 15 goals this season and has been on consistently electric form throughout.
He is tipped as the best player to emerge out of Crewe’s prestigious academy, even though the likes of Dean Ashton, David Platt and Danny Murphy have all graduated from there.
Powell isn’t expected to make the jump into the United first team immediately and a loan move is a possible option for the attacker this season. Nevertheless, it is certainly a step in the right direction for the England Under-18 international who can now really stake his claim on moving up the age ranks and making a serious future bid to be part of the full senior international side.
Although primarily playing as an attacker, Powell does like the attacking midfield role and can be used on either wing. He is a very versatile player that always seems effective wherever he is put.
The move is unlikely to get the United fans too excited, with a number of young english midfielders already within their ranks such as Tom Cleverly and brothers Will and Michael Keane, who have been promised some first team action this season.
