19-year-old Jack Butland has replaced Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy in England’s Euro 2012 squad after the Canaries’ goalkeeper pulled out with a broken finger.
Butland was initially named on the stand-by list despite being uncapped and spending most of last season on-loan at Cheltenham Town in League Two where he kept 11 clean sheets in 24 appearances.
He is contracted to Birmingham City but is yet to make an appearance for the midlands club.
Roy Hodgson told reporters in Oslo, ahead of England’s friendly with Norway tomorrow, “”We’ve given a chance to the young Under-21 goalkeeper Jack Butland who is cutting short his holiday in Mexico and coming to Poland instead,”
Butland has represented England at every youth level and is currently the first choice for England Under 21s. He was part of the side that travelled to Colombia for last year’s FIFA Under 20 World Cup where he kept clean sheets in all group games and only conceding once afterwards against Nigeria.
