Barclays Under 21 Premier League Kicks Off

Adam Campbell netted a first half hat-trick for Newcastle United.

This weekend marked the inaugural matches of the Barclays U21 Premier League.

Chelsea and Manchester City shared a point each in a goalless game whilst Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United celebrated wins.

England Under 19 international Saido Berahino grabbed a double for the Baggies as they ran out winners at home to Everton.

He recovered from a penalty spot miss early on to inspire a win on the opening day.

He scored his first goal on 17 minutes before Chris Wood sent the Baggies further in front. Shane Duffy managed to pull one back for Everton but Berahino grabbed his brace and put the win beyond doubt.

Newcastle and Tottenham fought out an entertaining game as the match finished 6-4 to the Tyneside club.

Newcastle took a 5-1 lead into the break as Adam Campbell grabbed a hat-trick. Haris Vuckik also scored for Newcastle and Ryan Mason pulled one back for Spurs.

In the second half Newcastle’s lead was extended by Bradden Inman before an onslaught by Spurs that saw them score three times within ten minutes. Yago Falque scored either side of a Cristian Ceballos header.

Darren Fletcher featured for Manchester United as part of the three overage players rule against Stoke. It proved useful as Manchester United ran out 1-0 winners through Scott Wootton.

West Ham United beat Reading 3-1 as Paul McCallum struck twice.

Arsenal’s Under 21 game this evening against Bolton Wanderers is available to watch for £4 at the Emirates.
