Manchester United have their eyes on South American starlet Juan Fernando Quintero, according to the Mail.
But it was in January that Quintero stated his own interest in the Premier League champions in an exclusive interview by the Bleacher Report: “I’m aiming high: Manchester United, AC Milan, Juventus. I’ll make a decision with my family and Calleri, my agent.
“I strive to be like Rivaldo, he’s the best. But I’ve still got a lot to learn and work on before I can reach his level.”
The Colombian U20 midfielder won the Player of the Tournament award at this year’s South American Youth Championship, which has attracted a wealth of attention from a host of European outfits.
He is currently on-loan at Pescara in Italy’s Serie A from his current club Atletico Nacional.
It is no secret that United are looking to bolster their squad with a midfielder since the retirement of Paul Scholes and have been linked to a host of names over the past few years. Despite Michael Carrick’s fledging form they have targeted Luka Modric and Lucas Moura in the past – signalling from Fergie that they may prefer an attacking edge, which Quintero brings in abundance.
In the South American Youth Championship he triumphantly led Colombia to the title and scored five goals en route.
Last year he did make his senior international debut for the Colombians in a friendly against Cameroon and has been previously called up twice by manager Jose Pekerman.
In April, his agent Ricardo Calleri told Tuttomercatoweb.com that there was already various bids for Quintero and how well his adaption to Italian football has been: “Everyone knew about his qualities, the question was regarding how quickly he would adapt to Italy.
“A player with his ability was always going to settle. When you are a champion, you are a champion anywhere.
“His future? I can say that the most important clubs are and will be interested in signing him. He has various offers already, but the decision will be made by Pescara,” he said.
Football Italia have previously reported he will be on his way to Atletico Madrid, claiming his agent was seen in Spain engaging in talks.
The amount of rumours flying around means it seems Quintero will be on his way this summer.
