Turkey beat Ukraine today to become the first side to qualify for this summer’s European Under 19 Championship.
They won 2-0 courtesy of an Ibrahim Yilmaz double to record three wins out of three and finish five points ahead of second-place Italy, who drew with Russia today in their Elite Qualifying Round group, of which only the top side progresses.
They are the first side to reach the tournament through qualifying and will join hosts Lithuania in the draw for the group phase, which is scheduled to start on 20th July.
A win always secured Turkey’s advance to the main tournament but the other group match still provided fitting entertainment.
Russia and Italy shared six goals between them in a game that could have gone either way. Luca Garritano opened the scoring for the Italians before Andrei Panyukov levelled the scores. Defender Marco Bennassi put Italy back in front but Panyukov equalised again and teammate Dmitri Efremov put them ahead. Michele Moroni netted the final goal of the game as the two sides shared the points – condemning host nation Russia to a bottom-placed finish.
