Zaha Should Be Fit For Opening Game Says Pearce

Stuart Pearce believes Wilfried Zaha should be fit for England Under 21’s opening encounter against Italy tomorrow in the European Championship.

Zaha’s last competitive game of the season was against Watford in last Monday’s Championship Play Off Final, in which his contribution was outstanding in securing the Eagles Premier League status. This meant that Zaha only joined the squad at the weekend, along with Watford midfielder Nat Chalobah.

“He shouldn’t be a doubt,” Pearce told FATV.

“He’s obviously played a real full season with the play off final last Monday and the plan was to put him in for the warm up and then work with the physios.

“We’ll have a look at him again tomorrow and find out exactly where he is in regard to his fitness but we shouldn’t have a problem with him.”

Pearce was quick to praise Zaha, who could be one of England’s leading lights as they battle for glory against Norway and Israel, as well as Italy in the group stage.

“His contribution the whole season for Palace, getting a move to Manchester United and then on top of that winning the play offs has been oustanding.

“He’s left the club back in the Premier League. He’ll travel to Manchester United and he’ll be a cult hero at Palace,” Pearce said.
