England under 17s wrapped up their first European Championship qualifying round yesterday with a thrashing of Republic of Ireland to send them top of the group and through to the Elite Round.
Adam Armstrong and Issy Brown netted braces while Patrick Roberts and Ryan Ledson also contributed to the storming victory.
England dominated from the start as Ireland sat deep and Tom Brewitt almost broke the deadlock when he headed his effort over from a corner early on.
Jonjoe Kenny nutmegged a defender on the edge of the box to put England 1-0 up when his pass found Brown to confidently slot home.
Fulham midfielder Roberts doubled England’s lead and Armstrong reacted to a loose ball on the edge of the area to make it three.
Four minutes after half-time Armstrong took advantage of a parried shot by the Ireland goalkeeper to slot home for four.
Brown was fed through one-on-one to make it five and the rout was complete when Ledson converted a penalty following a foul on Roberts towards the end of the match.
The draw for the Elite Round qualifiers takes place in March.
