Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored the decisive penalty as Chelsea went through to the Barclays U21 Premier League final last night.
In front of the Sky Sports cameras, Dermot Drummy’s men took a first-half lead but Manchester City grabbed an equaliser ten minutes from time.
The tie went to extra-time and with the scores 4-4 after five penalties each, Olivier Ntcham squandered a chance to put the pressure on the London club and gave Loftus-Cheek the chance to fire Chelsea into the final.
Chelsea will meet either Manchester United or Liverpool in the final. Those two sides play in the other semi-final this evening on BT Sport.
Man City could have taken the lead early on as Jordy Hiwula failed to convert one-on-one past Jamal Blackman.
Chelsea went straight down the other end and former Celtic striker Islam Feruz jumped highest to plant a header across Ian Lawlor and give his side the lead.
Isaiah Brown had a golden opportunity to double the lead. Ellis Plummer got his feet tangled on the edge of his own box and gifted Brown an one-on-one opportunity but the ball went narrowly wide of Lawlor’s far post.
Marcos Lopes kicked off the second-half with yet another one-on-one chance but Blackman was once again equal to his effort.
Loftus-Cheek, fresh off the substitutes bench, then had the chance to make it two for Chelsea, but his header from a corner was cleared off the line by George Glendon.
It would be a chance that Loftus-Cheek would later rue as ten minutes from the end City found themselves level. Thierry Ambrose won the ball back on the halfway line before making a surging run down the left wing. He put a low ball in the centre to Olivier Ntcham who turned and shot into the bottom corner.
Devante Cole came closest for Patrick Vieira’s side in extra-time but the tie ultimately went to penalties.
Kasey Palmer had the chance to win it for Chelsea at 4-4 but he missed. Luckily for him Ntcham saw his effort saved and Loftus-Cheek won the tie.
