England Under 17s Make Winning Start To European Championship

Fulham forward Patrick Roberts struck twice as England ran out 3-0 winners in their opening match of the 2014 European Under 17 Championship.

Adam Armstrong of Newcastle United also netted against the host nation.

Ryan Ledson captained a side that looked dominant from the very start. Armstrong brushed the wrong side of the post after just one minute.

Roberts scored his first after quarter of an hour when he cut in from the right and lashed an effort across goal and into the bottom corner.

He turned provider ten minutes later for Armstrong to grab his first. Roberts pulled it back from the byline for Armstrong to slot home.

It was three when Roberts netted an unstoppable drive from outside of the box – well worth a watch on our Twitter feed.

Callum Cooke came close to scoring a fourth for England and Armstrong almost grabbed his second when he hit the crossbar in the closing stages.

Scotland had a less favourable experience in their opening game of the tournament against Portugal.

Strikes from Renato Sanches and Luis Mata sunk a resolute Scotland side, who did give a very credible performance.

Elsewhere, Holland edged out Turkey 3-2 in a repeat of the 2005 final. Germany drew with Switzerland in Group B’s other game.
